Adlai E Stevenson High School Moves Back Start Time

From The Principal
Kenneth L. Cucchi III

 Good afternoon Titan Families,

I want to provide you with a brief update on the adjustment to our school calendar and exam schedule.

The goal of our entire UCS team is to allow our students to enter the upcoming break healthy and able to take the time necessary to reconnect with family and friends. We want our students to enter the break able to relax and recharge after what has been an emotional several weeks.

Our district has been working with our administration and teachers to provide a level of flexibility regarding the coming exams. The exam window will be Tuesday through Friday, December 14 through 17. Individual teachers will notify students on their exam date.  Monday through Thursday will be full days of school.  Friday, December 17 will be a half day.

Specifically, teachers may give exams during the following windows:

Tuesday, Dec. 14 and Thursday, Dec. 16: 4th, 5th, and 6th Period Exams

Wednesday, Dec. 15 and Friday, Dec. 17: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Period Exams

Taking the additional time to focus on the relationships in our lives is the right thing to do. Our goal remains to create an environment that allows our students to enter the break healthy and can spend much needed time reestablishing the important family traditions and connecting with their loved ones.

It is essential that students are in attendance on the final half-day – Friday, December 17 - so that we have a strong start to our second semester. Students will attend their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hours on that day to complete their exams.

During January, Stevenson High School will distribute reports cards electronically.  The second marking period grades will be sent electronically to families at the end of the day on Friday, January 7, 2022. To receive the report cards, parents will need to have a secure PowerSchool account. Parents who do not have access to a PowerSchool account will need to register for one prior to Wednesday, January 5, 2022. The report cards will then be automatically e-mailed to the address that is used to register the PowerSchool account. If you already have a PowerSchool account, you do not need to take any further action. The report card will be automatically sent to you. If you have any concerns, please reach out to us or your child's teacher!

If you have any concerns, please reach out to us or your child's teachers.

Obviously, this has been a few challenging weeks. The challenging weeks were made significantly more manageable thanks to all of you! I want to thank this incredible community for reaching out, for being active partners in making sure out students are safe, and for responsibly engaging with the school and authorities to ensure we have had information that we need to make sure our staff and students are safe.

I know this has been stressful. As a parent of two school-aged teen-agers, we've had to have a lot of challenging conversations at our dinner table this week as well. I applaud all of you for facing those conversations head-on, for having them with empathy, and for reiterating some of the important messages that we've shared. I want to reiterate the importance of speaking to our children in a responsible way. Mr. Monroe's message last week shared information about how to have meaningful conversations with our children. The National Association of School Psychologists does an incredible job of providing guidance and I strongly suggest that you look at their Tips for Parents and Teachers.

Seniors are invited to apply for the 2022 Superintendent's Scholarship awards program. The scholarships are funded with proceeds from the Utica Community Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence's annual Evening of Excellence and other sources.  The online application went live on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Students are required to submit a copy of their high school transcript as well as receive one recommendation from a teacher, school counselor, administrator, or non-family member. The individual making the recommendation will need to submit an online appraisal.

In addition to the Superintendent's Scholarship, there are several optional scholarship opportunities within the application – the Brett Klenow Scholarship, the Stefan's Hope Scholarship, the Larry M. Smith Memorial Scholarship, and the Richard LaBaere Educational Scholarship.  The application will be available on December 7 at: www.UticaK12.org/SuperintendentScholarship or on the UCS home page under "Students" in the mid-menu on the center of the page. The deadline to submit the completed application and appraisal is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

In addition, our Commencement Dates and Location have been approved and released.  Utica Schools will be returning to the O Rena at Oakland University for our 2022 Commencement exercises.  Stevenson High School will have its graduation on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.  More information to come!

Finally, a reminder to all students that ID cards are required to be on your person at all times.  Not only for security reasons, but because you need to scan them at lunch!  We must record who is getting a lunch even though you're not paying this year.  So, please make sure you have that card.

Last but certainly not least, please be sure to check out the Stevenson Student Advisory Board Application that's located under "Announcements" in this issue of the Titan Voice and under Parent Quick Links located at https://stevenson.uticak12.org/ .

This will be the last Titan Voice for 2021.  We wish everyone a Happy Holiday and a Fantastic 2022!

With Titan Pride,

Kenneth L. Cucchi III
